Good afternoon, Prince George Families and Employees,
I hope this message finds you well after the Independence Day holiday weekend. I am writing to you this morning to share some important information.
Over the holiday weekend, we identified a cybersecurity incident that impacted parts of our technology network. Upon discovery, we took immediate action to contain the issue, activated our established response protocols, and engaged leading cybersecurity professionals to assist with the investigation and recovery process. We are also coordinating closely with state and federal law enforcement agencies to determine the nature and extent of the incident.
Fortunately, this occurred while school buildings are closed for summer break, allowing our team the time and space to focus fully on remediation efforts without disrupting classroom learning.
At this time, critical safety infrastructure, including security systems, building access controls, and phone lines, remain fully operational. Some internal systems have been taken offline out of an abundance of caution while we conduct a deliberate and secure restoration process. This includes our email server. For our staff, this means you will not be able to send or receive emails for the time being. Please know we are working diligently to bring all systems back online as quickly and safely as possible.
For our families, if you need to reach a member of our staff, please call your child's school directly or the school board office at (804) 733-2700.
Cyber incidents are an unfortunate and growing challenge for institutions of all sizes, including public school systems. We are treating this as an opportunity to further strengthen our safeguards and resilience moving forward.
We deeply value the confidence our families, staff, and the community place in us. That trust is at the heart of our commitment to clear and timely communication. As the investigation continues, we will share verified updates and relevant information as it becomes available.
Thank you for your time and attention, and I will be in touch with an update as new information becomes available.
Sincerely,
Dr. Wayne Lyle
Superintendent
Prince George County Public Schools
